Software Engineer, Customer Success at Automattic

Location: Seattle

WordPress VIP (WPVIP), the enterprise division of Automattic, is the world’s leading agile content management platform. Our suite of open solutions and services brings the ease and agility of WordPress to the heart of the largest enterprises in the world. Our large and growing ecosystem of technologies, services, and integrations is designed to bring the freedom and power of open source to our customers, which include Facebook, The New York Times, Salesforce, and hundreds more.

About the Role

The Customer Success Software Engineer role is responsible for ensuring our customers’ ultimate technical success in scaling, building, and deploying world-class applications on top of our powerful platform. In this diverse, customer-facing role, you will provide technical and architectural consulting and advice to customer teams and leadership; solve complex, often mission-critical problems with customer deployments and applications; promote platform knowledge and feature adoption to our customers; and propose, design, and build the tools and processes that power our business.

As an integral part of a support or consulting squad at WPVIP, you’ll focus on our customer’s technical needs and goals. But you’ll also have ample opportunity to contribute to WPVIP’s platform and the open-source tools (including WordPress core) that we build upon. We encourage periodical rotation to one of our product teams in order to contribute to the platform. In addition, the role includes continuous opportunities to ship code and solutions as part of one of our many project squads.

About You
• You are an engineer with a drive for real-world outcomes. You may have a background as a full-stack product engineer, or as an engineer in enterprise or media — but you are ready to roll up your sleeves and work directly with a wide spectrum of interesting global customers.
• You have a solid understanding of modern PHP. You may also have roots in modern JavaScript — either front-end application frameworks or Node.js.
• You will never stop learning. You have a willingness to rapidly learn new technologies.
• You have excellent written English and can effectively communicate with customers, sometimes under stressful circumstances. Communication is our oxygen and the basis of everything we do.
• You like actively solving problems. You are excited by the idea of deep, collaborative problem-solving on a regular basis and motivated by the prospect of what you’ll learn along the way.
• You may have experience with some of the following: software engineering industry standards across the full lifecycle, coding standards and team coding practices, source control (primarily Git), build processes, testing methodologies, and cloud infrastructures.
What to Expect

We know applying to jobs can be stressful and we want to ease the stress by giving clear expectations up front about what to expect from our process. We’ve outlined everything you need to know here including all of the steps in the process as well as how we approach hiring ( Note: For the Software Engineer, CS position, we conduct the coding challenge before the Slack interview ). We’re always iterating so if you happen to join us in the process, please feel free to offer feedback on what else we can include there!

About The Team

We are first and foremost engineers, though our backgrounds and experiences in life and career vary. We typically have a deep background in either WordPress development itself (some of us are long time developers/contributors, experienced themers and plugin developers) and/or the web (others of us are devs with backgrounds in media or general technology.) All of us have a deep interest in code, learning and a commitment to open source, WordPress and the future of the open web.

We are also passionate advocates for our customers. We are unafraid of ambiguous or challenging situations involving code, humans or both. We understand the wider and human contexts of technical decisions. We are able to communicate effectively across cultures and organizations, sometimes in difficult situations. We are most engaged when solving truly interesting problems collaboratively. We care about our customers, and share a commitment to helping them achieve their goals!

Ready to apply? Fill out the form below and let us know what you can contribute to the team!

Senior Site Reliability Engineer – Managed WordPress at Godaddy

Location: Seattle

Location:

At GoDaddy the future of work looks different for each team. Some teams work in the office full-time, others have a hybrid arrangement (they work remotely some days and in the office some days) and some work entirely remotely.

This position may be a hybrid or fully remote position, as decided by your manager. If designated as hybrid, you’ll divide your time between working remotely from your home and an office location, so you should live within commuting distance. If designated as remote, you’ll be working remotely from your home and may occasionally visit a GoDaddy office to meet with your team for events or offsites. Your hiring manager can share more about this role’s hybrid or remote designation.

This position is not eligible to be performed in Alaska, Mississippi, North Dakota, or the Virgin Islands.

Join our team…

The Product:

GoDaddy is one of the world’s largest providers of WordPress hosting. Our Managed WordPress product is a key pillar of GoDaddy’s business, with nearly a million sites. We know that each one of these is someone’s business, project, portfolio, wedding site, etc., and that they depend on us to make sure that it just works. There are very interesting technical challenges in keeping this many sites running as efficiently and securely as possible.

The Platform:

We are a small team that manages the core platform that all these sites run on. This includes the traffic routing, caching, monitoring, infrastructure provisioning, troubleshooting, and development of in-house software. The platform is generally containerized and managed using Nomad. There are special challenges at our scale, and a lot of the complexity comes into how we segment the customers, wire together the bits of infrastructure they need, and pass on the metadata necessary for their sites to run.

The Role:

We are looking for an experienced developer that is comfortable with Linux-based infrastructure. If you happen to be fluent in Ansible, Python, distributed data stores, Prometheus, Golang, C, PHP, Kibana, Nomad, AWS, etc., those will all be quite helpful, but because our platform is always evolving, it’s far more important that you are good at learning and curious enough to continually find new opportunities to improve the platform.

For this role, we need someone that has experience driving small projects and making technical decisions with minimal oversight. It’s critical that you be a team player, and that you are comfortable as a tech leader in an agile development team, and that you are comfortable mentoring new developers. We work closely with several other teams, and we depend on our experienced developers to identify problems and opportunities that exist across these teams.

What you’ll get to do…
• Hands-on engineering, delivering on our roadmap
• Leading key efforts
• Troubleshooting
• Identifying improvements that we bring onto the backlog
• Making architectural decisions and participating in larger architectural discussions
• Communicating with stakeholders and partners
• Monitoring and addressing concerns with Security, Performance, Availability and
Quality

Your experience should include…
• 3+ years of Site Reliability Engineering experience
• Linux command-line experience (e.g., bash) including troubleshooting
• Experience working with monitoring/observability tools
• Experience working in an Agile engineering team (e.g., Scrum/Kanban)
• Experience with CICD tooling such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code solutions such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet
• Experience with Docker, including orchestration software like K8 or Nomad
• Experience with Log Aggregation
• Experience with APM technologies, such as New Relic, Data Dog or Elastic APM
• Experience with programming languages, such as Go, Python or C. While software
development is not a primary responsibility of this role, you may need to make
minor PRs to codebases.
• Experience with Load Testing Frameworks, such as Siege, AB, K6.io, etc

You will gain experience working with:
• Reverse proxies and caches (HAProxy, Varnish, Apache, FastCGI, and custom GoLang)
• Ansible and bash
• Containers using Nomad
• A rich monitoring ecosystem that includes ELK, Prometheus, Grafana, and New Relic
• Distributed file stores
• Troubleshooting WordPress
• Deployment of infrastructure and configurations at scale

We’ve got your back… Enjoy our many benefits (My Wallet), including paid time off, 401k, equity grants and parental leave. Join one of our employee resource groups (Culture). Continue to have a side hustle, if you have one (we love entrepreneurs, remember?). Most importantly, come as you are and make your own way.

About us… GoDaddy is empowering everyday entrepreneurs around the world by providing all of the help and tools to succeed online. GoDaddy is the place people come to name their idea, build a professional website, attract customers, sell their products and services, and manage their work. Our mission is to give our customers the tools, insights and the people to transform their ideas and personal initiative into success.
